Why Are Custom Mugs More Expensive in Smaller Quantities?

You’ve planned an exclusive event and you only need 30 customized mugs. But when you receive the quotation, the cost per piece is surprisingly higher than if you had ordered 500 mugs.

Why does this happen? Is the supplier just trying to make a larger profit?

The short answer is: No. It all comes down to the unavoidable fixed costs of setting up the production line.

Whether you are printing 30 mugs or 3,000 mugs, the heavy lifting happens before the printing even begins. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at why smaller quantities carry a higher price tag—and how you can get the best value for your money.

1. The Reality of Fixed Setup Costs

In ceramic printing, the production process is exactly the same for big and small orders. While raw material costs (the blank mugs themselves) adjust based on quantity, the initial setup costs remain 100% fixed.

Before a single mug is printed, our production team must prepare:

  • Custom Artworks & Films

  • Silkscreens (A brand new, custom screen must be created for every single colour in your logo)

  • Wares and specialized packaging

Let’s do the math: Imagine the total labor and machinery setup cost for a specific design is RM200.

  • If you print 1,000 pieces, that setup cost is spread out, adding only RM0.20 to each mug.

  • If you only print 100 pieces, that exact same setup cost adds RM2.00 to each mug.

2. The Ceramic Printing Difference: Why We Can’t “Combine” Orders

You might wonder: “Why can’t you just print my small order alongside someone else’s to save costs?”

In standard paper printing (like flyers or business cards), printers use a standard CMYK process to blend four main colors. This allows them to compile dozens of different customer jobs onto one machine at the same time.

Ceramic printing is different. To achieve the absolute best, permanent, and vibrant results on ceramics, we use Spot Colours. Because no two corporate logos or custom designs share the exact same spot colours, it is impossible to combine jobs. Your small batch requires its very own dedicated ink mixing, screen setup, and high-temperature firing time.

3. What is the “Sweet Spot” for Pricing?

For the best balance of cost efficiency and volume, the optimum quantity is 500 pieces per design. As your quantity goes up from there, your cost per piece will continue to drop. Furthermore, keeping your design to 1 or 2 colours will also drastically lower your setup costs!

4. Our Commitment to Small Orders

We understand that not everyone needs hundreds of mugs. Sometimes, you truly only need 30 or 40 pieces for a VIP event, a small team, or a niche campaign.

While many industrial printers reject small orders entirely, we still accept them because we want to support our customers’ unique needs. For these smaller batches, we offer a minimum base package (usually equivalent to the cost of producing 50 pieces) to cover the intensive labor and setup required.

We may not make much profit on small orders, but we are committed to delivering the same premium, permanent, scratch-proof quality to you—whether you order 30 pieces or 30,000.

Mengapa Tempahan Gelas Berkualiti Dalam Kuantiti Kecil Lebih Mahal?

Anda merancang sebuah acara eksklusif dan hanya memerlukan 30 biji gelas cawan (mugs) yang dikhususkan (customized). Namun, apabila anda menerima sebut harga, kos seunit ternyata lebih tinggi berbanding jika anda menempah 500 biji.

Mengapa perkara ini berlaku? Adakah pihak pembekal sengaja ingin mengambil keuntungan yang besar?

Jawapan ringkasnya: Tidak.

  • Karya Seni (Artworks) & Filem Tersuai

Namun, percetakan seramik amat berbeza.

4. Komitmen Kami terhadap Tempahan Kecil

Kami faham bahawa bukan semua orang memerlukan ratusan biji cawan.

Walaupun banyak pencetak industri menolak tempahan kecil sepenuhnya, kami tetap menerimanya kerana kami ingin menyokong keperluan unik pelanggan kami.
